Maesteg is located in the borough of Bridgend in the vale of Glamorgan. With a population of over 20,000, Maesteg developed due to the introduction of local ironworks during the 1820’s – 1830’s. It was also a coal mining location until 1985 when the last deep mine pit at Saint John’s Colliery was closed. Before the 19th century, Maesteg was seen as a small rural village

Now Maesteg is seen as a commuter town for the local steel works, which are located at Port Talbot. It is home to local football club Maesteg Park A.F.C, Maesteg Cricket Club and four Welsh Rugby Union teams including Maesteg RFC, Maesteg Harlequins RFC, Nantyffllon RFC and Maesteg Celtic RFC. Maesteg also offers an indoor heated pool, a sports centre, and a squash club.

Known for it’s singing, Maesteg has a cultural background involving music and theatre. The band, Funeral for a Friend, originally started their musical career in Maesteg and the mother of the two sisters, Kylie and Danni Minogue was born in Maesteg before she immigrated to Australia.

Built in 1881, Maesteg Town Hall is a centre for arts and entertainment and is used as a popular venue. The Maesteg property is also licensed for weddings, as well as for holding concerts, exhibitions and meetings.

The town centre offers many chain shops but has managed to encourage and maintain many smaller shops too. In more recent years, Maesteg has seen an increase in factories moving to the area, as well as many service industries such as retail, increasing the number of jobs available in the area.
